Neighbourhood policing team officer PC Alex Wilkinson was patrolling the rural areas of Richmondshire last night when he was made aware of a vehicle in the area with links to the theft of tractor GPS systems across several counties, including North Yorkshire.
Officers from the neighbourhood policing team, roads policing group, and dog support unit immediately began searching for the vehicle.
PC Wilkinson sighted the vehicle near Melsonby. It then made off before being tracked into the Darlington area, where officers from Durham Constabulary’s roads and armed policing unit joined the search.
The vehicle was subsequently located and stopped in Darlington in a joint effort between both North Yorkshire and Durham officers.
The two occupants of the vehicle were arrested on suspicion of their involvement in the GPS thefts and of being equipped to steal due to items found in the vehicle.
The two suspects were taken into custody to be interviewed.
PC Wilkinson said GPS systems from tractors are often targeted by thieves as high-value items.
